Since you're in the SLAM phase now, if you took the filter out before I think now would be a good time to put it back in, and maybe put a knee-high stocking or similar over the skimmer basket to catch more dead algae. Brushing like crazy generally helps as well -- makes sure all the algae has an opportunity to meet chlorine.
Just keep the FC at or above SLAM level until you meet the criteria for ending the SLAM -- water clear, CC no higher than 0.5, and passing an overnight chlorine loss test. The filtering part is usually the longest.
