Depending up the type of cover you have, yes, it can help to slow-down the consumption of FC
As for the calculator, first thing you do is at the top enter your pool volume (gallons). Then at the top-left you will see columns for NOW and TARGET. For example, let's say your FC is currently "0" and you want it up to "5". You would enter "0" in the NOW column, the "5" in the TARGET column. Then click off to the side anywhere and watch the middle of the chart give you the number of ounces required to hit your TARGET. For the FC row (info), make sure you look closely at the top! You have the option to select 6%, 8.25%, 10% strength and so on for bleach. If you got your bleach at HEB or Wal-Mart, it's probably 8.25%. It will say so on the ingredients label.
