Slam and silt

OK we had a green pool. I have been slamming for a week or so. We have a DE filter. My water is now not crystal clear but you can see the bottom at 6ft. I am having to add about 8 oz of shock twice a day to keep it at a slam level of 31. My question is this. We had a lot of leaves from last fall and now have very little. Our robotic pool cleaner, Prowler, is having silt that is gray in color. Is this dead algae or possible DE? I have been doing backwashes on the DE filter but not one in the past few days. I am still having to sweep steps etc to get rid of silt on them.

Its likely dead algae. Keep at the SLAM, including brushing, running the robot and backwashing when needed. Once crystal clear, do the OCLT and CC tests to see if you pass those. It sounds like the end is in sight, but you likely have a few more days.
