Sheer Descent Problem

Noticed today that my sheer descent has water running down the face of the stonework that it’s built into. The back wall of stone was also soaked. Pool was finished back in July 2015 - has anyone else dealt with a similar issue? Thanks for any insight and ideas!

Craig,

Does the water going to the sheer come from the main pump and go through the filter?

If so, the first thing to check is the filter pressure and make sure that your normal return water to the pool eyeballs is still strong.

When was the last time you cleaned your filter?

Is your sheer turned on and off with a valve? If so, it the valve manual or automated?

Show us a pic of your equipment pad plumbing.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks Jim - will post a pic tomorrow. Yes, the water comes from the pump through the filter. The cartridge filters and the housing are only a few months old - there was a crack in the housing so I replaced the entire housing and got new filters. The sheer was actually still pushing water out through the “slot” pretty normally, it’s just that a bunch of water seemed to be cascading down the face as well. The sheer is turned on and off with a manual valve. Thanks again!

Good morning Jim,

Here are a couple of pics - please let me know if they aren’t sufficient. Thanks again!

Craig,

In your pics the Sheers are shut off.. (I assume you know this..)

What happens if you turn the Sheer valve 180 degrees so that all the water goes to your sheers? What do the Sheers look like then?

Thanks,

Jim R.

Jim,

Yes, I turned the valve off yesterday to stop the leaking. I just turned the valve 180 degrees and took these pics. The water pressure was good coming out, but water is pouring down the front from the corner of the plastic. Also, the back wall got wet as well. Thank you!

Craig,

I just wanted to make sure it was not a water volume issue, which does not seem to be the case..

I like your idea of shutting it off for now.

What does it look like on the backside of your retaining wall?

Let's see if James might have any ideas of what is going on... Calling @JamesW

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thank you Jim,

The back side of the wall has water running down, but nowhere near as much as the front. It appears to be starting near the top and it’s a bit difficult to see in the pics.

The efflorescence points to a leak inside the wall. Unfortunately, the sheer is difficult to pressure test. Do you have access to the inside of the wall to check for leaks?

Hi James,

Thanks for the reply. No, I don’t have access to the inside of the wall, and will have to give the pool company who built it a call.
