Salt Cell Debris, what is it ?

Bought an inexpensive salt cell , installed it in October 2023. Thought everything was ok but recently have 'No Cell Power' and 'No Cell Power 2' on an Aqua Logic board. I have resoldered the relay etc etc.

My question is can the salt cell cause the 'no cell power' errors and what the heck is this debris inside the salt cell that will not come out with the acid soak ? It's hard as a brick and I would like to identify it so I can work on getting it out the safest and easiest way.

Thanks for the reply! Well I bought the 'stand' from the pool store that screws on to one side of the cell and poured a 50/50 mix of acid in there all the way to the top and let it sit over night. Then I dumped that out and noticed it still had the scale looking stuff so I did the same procedure but there was no bubbling. So I dumped that out and tried a little bit of straight acid right on the scale and it had no reaction. Now that I am typing this and thinking more about it, does the acid go bad if it was sitting in my shed for a year or two ? It might have even been already opened.
 
Hopefully the acid was bad because 50/50 is way to strong as it should be 4/1, 4 parts water to 1 part acid. You also need to dump it as soon as the bubble action ceased so by leaving it over night it will destroy the coating on the plates. The cell may be a dud because as you said you purchased inexpensive =short life.

If it is not calcium carbonate, it might be a different type of scale or maybe quartz sand from the filter or maybe quartz plaster aggregate.

I don't know what to do about the scale if acid won't dissolve it.

Maybe the acid is not good.

Try some new acid.

See if the scale is conductive using a ohmmeter.

Check the diagnostic readings.

Can you show both sides of the circuit board?

Thank you for sharing the troubleshooting info from Hayward. I'll check out the board.
Can anyone answer if the acid is old and has been open previously or if the acid is the low odor kind, it might not remove the scale in the salt cell?

Acid really does not go bad.

You can put a few drops on baking soda to see if it bubbles.

If it bubbles, the acid is probably ok.

Maybe the product is not acid?

Maybe someone used the bottle for a different chemical?
 
Maybe send the cell back to the manufacturer to see what they can do to help.

There are several chemicals that might work, but they are far too dangerous to recommend.

Maybe some sort of mechanical methods would be able to remove the scale.

I have switched to a newer ProLogic board and the pool store was able to clean, test and verify the salt cell is working correctly. I'm down to the last step which is programming my Hayward variable speed pump with the Prologic and I can't find any instructions for this. I got the pump to work on high speed, but then turns off on low speed. Can anyone share instructions on how to program the variable speed pump with the Prologic? Thank you!

Connect Pump to Line side power.
Set pump address by moving all DIP Switches to Off.
Connect 3 wires for communications.
Change Filter Configuration to Variable Speed Pump.
Program Filter Speeds and timers.

When communicating with the Omni family of controls, the HUA (Hayward Unique Address) is used for communication.

For all other Hayward controls, the pump address must be set using the DIP switches on the drive PCB.

What did they use to clean the cell?
I am not sure if they did anything special to it. I dropped it off and they called me 30 minutes later to pick it up.
What exact model number pump?
Hayward VS950
