Safety Cover Vault Rust Getting in the Pool.

We have an in ground 22k gal salt pool with an auto cover that hides away in a vault. On occasion we would get pieces of rusty metal in that end of the pool but over the last few weeks they have increased in size and frequency. I was able to pull back the cover and inspect a bit and found terrible rust happening.

In the second picture you can see a bit of blue which is the back side of the wall board I think and the rust is happening to the metal wall behind it. The vault doesn't really sit with water in it much but when the cover has a little water on it when I open it some will get in.

Does anyone know if this will mean the vault needs replaced or something else (worse)? I'm a novice with this so any advice would be helpful or if anyone would need different pictures to be able to tell I can try to get different shots.

The steel wall of your pool vault has rotted away.

How old is the pool?

When was the liner last replaced?

Chances are you have rust in other areas of the pool walls under the liner. You will find out the condition of the pool walls when you replace the liner.

Eventually the cover and mechanism need to be removed and the vault walls rebuilt.

We just replaced the liner this year and the guy didn’t see any of the rust I guess because the cover was never removed or opened?

I think the pool was put in back in 2013. To rebuild the vault walls is that a job that require the concrete to be broken back up or is it a drain the pool and work from the pool side?

You need to talk to repair companies about how they would tackle the repairs.
