Anyone try replacing your DE filter drain plug with a valve? I want to do this so I can use a sock to catch all the DE and to hook up a hose to drain the filter so I can clean the grids. When I just drain the tank now it just makes a big mess with the DE and water going everywhere. Please let me know what you think.

It's a good idea. Just don't skimp on the valve. A lot of the plastic valves you can buy -- okay, all of them -- at the big box hardware store will eventually deform and bind up and then the handle will break. And I can almost guarantee it will happen late at night, on a weekend, when you have people coming tomorrow, and you don't remember where you stored the original plug.
Also be aware that running water and DE through the valve may bind up the guts. Try and find a valve that can handle granular material as well as liquid.
