Taking the stairs out may help a ton. AG ladders often love to collect algae because of all the hidey areas.

My plan is to get the steps out and clean them up this week. Keep it maintained and clear for the next week or so then blast it with 4 to 6 gallons of liquid shock to raise the FC up. Then close it. Getting the tree branch cut back this week that over hangs it. How often should a cartridge filter be cleaned? The pool guy told me once a year it needs cleaned and then replaced about every 3? Does that seem odd?
Usually we say that cleaning is dependent on filter pressure. 20-25% over clean pressure is when we recommend cleaning. And at least once a year, if your pressure doesn't rise enough.
Only need to replace if it's got a tear, or is gummed up and can't be cleaned anymore.
