Pump Blow Up

Hi, I just opened my above ground pool, and the water is nice and clear, looks great, went to turn my pump on and she blew up. I have a new one ordered but it won’t be until Thursday, so should I add any chemicals or just let it be till then.

Add 5 ppm of liquid chlorine daily and stir the water with your pool pole.

What part of this blew up? The actual pump, or filter? Got pics? I'm curious.... no one was hurt I hope?

It was the pump and no, no one got hurt, it just got hot and smoked really bad and I was shut it off.

Yes just hooked it up to start for the summer, I live in Illinois. It is 13 years old.

I wonder if the wires were connected incorrectly? That's what it sounds like to me.

Ah well, live and learn. In the meantime use liquid chlorine as you normally would and brush it around good to circulate. We gotta try to avoid algae taking up residence.

If you have a sump pump, maybe sink it into the pool and let the hose fly around wildly in the water? I did that while doing some plumbing changes earlier this year.

If using any sort of sump pump try to keep the pump off the liner or just don't leave it in the pool longer than it needs to be. There have been a few people who have gotten rust stains from sump pumps left in the pool.
