Pump Basket Lid

Could be as simple as a loose pump basket lid or bad O-ring. It's pretty common to have air leaks in valves too.

Can you take the lid off without draining the pool?

Explain your pumping system to us. Is your pump lower in elevation than the surface of your pool water?

As Marty noted above, it depends. If you have an AGP and the pump is below the waterline, you have to plug the suction port first. If you have an inground pool, you should be able to.
