I know we will need a pump or pump motor soon so I'm researching. The folks at InyoPools told me that I can upgrade my current single speed pump with this VS motor for about 1/2 or 1/3 of the price of a whole new pump.
Hayward MaxFlo VS Motor Upgrade Kit - 1.65HP - MKIT1VS16 - INYOPools.com

That sounds great to me but there's not a lot of details or specs on the motor and no reviews or questions. It's listed as 1.65 HP - at some point my husband would like to put in a heater and I would like a SWG. Is this sufficient for that? My knowledge of VS pumps is about this much <>.

or I think I can replace the motor with a dual speed pump but have to buy the switch separately:
A.O. Smith Century 1.5 HP Round Flange 56J Dual Speed Full Rate Motor - STS1152R - INYOPools.com
A.O. Smith End Cover Switch Assembly - 1011431-001 - INYOPools.com

Thoughts from the gurus are appreciated.

Do you have a MaxFlo pump now? That is a V-Green ECM16CU motor. That is an excellent price for all that comes with the kit. You can use your existing timer to control it. A 2-speed motor would also require the purchase of a 2-speed time clock, not inexpensive, and rewiring to the motor for the additional wire needed for the second speed. Manually switching speeds would get old very quickly and the cost for that 2-speed motor and end cover is too close the the variable speed motor to even consider it.

I do have a Max Flo pump but it's ancient and a single speed pump. I have no existing timer control. I am the timer control and turn it on and off at the switch on the gray electrical box. Do I need to use a timer control with a VSP pump?
At this point, anything is upgrade for us.

It is always best to use a time clock. The VSP motor you are looking at has a built in timer, but no clock. You set run times and speeds. The cycle repeats ever 24 hours once power is applied. If you install it, set up speeds, etc. it will go into its cycle when you press start and you don't need to touch it a gain except to use the "Stop" and "Start" buttons to service the system. Some people use it that way. If you power it off the cycle begins anew when powered back on.

I wonder if they make something similar but with a built in clock...

Would a separate one be something like this?
