Pool water is green

We were late opening our pool this year due to a May vacation. After removing the cover we found many leaves had made their way into the pool over winter. My husband insisted on vacuuming every speck of dirt out before starting up the chlorinator. Two weeks later... he still hasn't dumped salt or started the chlorinator and now the pool water has turned green with algae. Never had to deal with this before - need advice, please.

. Which is the preferred product for an above ground pool?
Still liquid chlorine. :p Cal-hypo adds calcium which your vinyl pool does not need. Dichlor and trichlor add stabilizer. Neither of those products are ideal to sustain a SLAM Process. Liquid is also easier to dose in my opinion.
