Polaris Back-Up Valve

I have a Polaris 380 and it was not installed with a back-up valve.

Do all Polaris cleaners require a back-up valve?

What does the back-up valve do or what is it for?
My Polaris seems to work just fine without one.

Opinions and help appreciated.

If you find it's cleaning fine without, then don't worry about not having one. It just improves the maneuverability of the unit by periodically making a jet of water to push the unit to a different part of the pool, further randomizing its cleaning pattern and increasing surface area coverage. Though if you do install one you may find that your Polaris may cover your pool more efficiently, requiring less run time.
