Hi Everyone! We finished our house build a few months ago, and are interested in building a 20x40 rectangular IG pool in our backyard (with a 7x7 spa). We've interviewed at least 6 pool guys (5 gunite, 1 vynil liner), and liked this guy the best by far. Also, as we were interviewing landscapers, they asked if we had considered this company, because they liked working with them. We were also surprised that their bid came in fairly competitively. Here's the bid: (I think we're just going to add the "Universal Finest Finish" (+$4500) and get a $3500 discount for keeping the dirt onsite for grading, so net +$1000).

Re: New pool build in San Jose, CA (with bid)

Also trying to decide between a sport-pool and a standard 8-ft deep end. My wife and I both really like diving boards, and also think people will be diving in anyways, so it'd be safer to actually have a deep end. OTOH, that's a lotta extra water to heat!

Re: New pool build in San Jose, CA (with bid)

An ozone system is not needed with an outdoor pool. The sun does that job for free. That should save you $10K :goodjob:

Re: New pool build in San Jose, CA (with bid)

Same size pool for us almost under construction and we went diving board pool. Kids will dive, maybe not yours, but some will. Another option is an 8' pool with no board but an identified "dive zone". If I were building a diving board pool, it would be 8 1/2 or 9', not 8'. 8 is the minimum but why not get a bit of leeway, peace of mind, safety margin, even if only to help you sleep better while your teenage kids (now or in the future) are having a late night swim with their friends. Oh, I am building a pool. Guess that was my reasoning then.

Good point! I'll have to ask how much more expensive 8.5' is than 8'.

Quite honestly, for what you're spending it shouldn't cost a dime more. Our vinyl pool was originally spec'd for 3.5' and 6' respectively. We decided a day or 2 before the dig that we wanted the depth increased to 4' and 7' and our PB made it happen with no fuss. It's 10 more minutes behind the bobcat/backloader, a few extra square feet of vinyl, and 2-3 more bags of vermiculite. This is a rounding error that most PBs should be prepared to eat. Be warry of the PB that tries to nickle and dime you.

Thanks for the feedback! Now for something a bit controversial, I'm sure :)

The current plan is to put all equipment about 4-5ft below water/ground level, and then cover it with a removable grate (so that it can breath). Our PB has been excellent, and he doesn't see a problem with this. Thoughts?
