Pentair Master Temp 400 Heater - electric?

Hello all. Our construction starts in just a few short weeks. We are constructing an 18x34, play bottom vinyl pool. 3.5' - 5.5' - 4- depths. Double end roman steps. Our builder uses pentair equipment. My husband asked our builder about electric pool heaters and pool pumps. We do not have gas on the property, our home is all electric. The pool builder discussed the heater with my husband and said he will order us a Pentair MasterTemp 400, electric. My concern is I have not found anywhere online that states the pentair master temps are electric. It appears to only come in gas and propane. Any experience? Am I misunderstanding?

Never heard of a Pentair MasterTemp 400, electric.

Best you can do is a heat pump. Pentair Ultratemp Heat Pump maxes out at 140,000 BTUs. Your pool is about 20,000 gallons and a 140,000 BTU heater will raise the water temp about 1/2 - 3/4 degree per hour. That should be fine for maintaining a pool temperature.

Maybe he is thinking you want propane? Propane of course is the most expensive way to heat a pool it will bankrupt you. ;)

There are electric heaters.

However, 400,000 btu per hour is 117,228 watts. At 240 volts, that's 488 amps.

A heat pump is probably the best option.

Solar might be a viable solution as well.

Pentair MasterTemp 400 is gas not an electric heat pump. Electric heat pumps do not come in the higher BTU's like the gas units do. The largest BTU heat pump is around 140,000 BTU.

JamesW, I have never seen that unit on a pool in my time of being in the business of heating pools. Plus as they state "Designed for high capacity commercial pool installations, " but I also have yet to see them on a commercial pool either.

It wasn't intended to be a recommendation.

It was to point out that a big electric heater wasn't a good choice for a residential pool.

I probably should have been more careful about how I wrote it.

We have the Pentair 120. It’s a electric heat pump. It’s a very good heater. Had it for 3 years now. It’s heats our 90,000 gallon pool. I keep it on 88 degrees in May & September. The electric is extremely expensive here in NY. Our bill are about $150 more in those two months. It’s about $5 bucks a day to run it.

Thank you! Our pool guy uses pentair and states our heater will be all electric, even though I cannot find an electric master-temp anywhere online. He says it is the same heater he used at his house. Our build was suppose to have started yesterday, but we have had a ridiculous amount of rain. I am keeping my fingers crossed we get started soon.
