Hi All,

First time posting. We are in the process of building a pool, 38x18 rectangle shaped with 12x6 sun shelf and 7x7 spa. We have green giants that we planted on the right side for privacy about 3 years ago. The PB sent us renderings below showing 2 options for the spa location. One at the deep end(pics 1-5) and the other adjacent to the sun shelf near the green giants (pics 6-8). My wife and I are a bit torn on which is better long term. While I like the look of both options, I worry the green giants will eventually encroach on the spa. Also, with the spa at the deep end, it gives us more room on the long end of the pool on the right. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

Hi and welcome to TFP! I am glad to meet you!

Like you I like the look of both. I do have to ask why you say this "with the spa at the deep end, it gives us more room on the long end of the pool on the right."?

I also would worry about the trees and all the "sharing" they will do with a body of water that close to the water.

One thing I want you to think about is this-While I LOVE your steps like that it could make it hard to swim laps with them there. I would think about making them just half way across to allow for lap swimming.

What depths are you looking at?

Thank you kimkats for your quick reply. When I say "with the spa at the deep end, it gives us more room on the long end of the pool on the right."? I mean more patio space on the right side if the spa was on the deep end.

What do you mean by "I also would worry about the trees and all the "sharing" they will do with a body of water that close to the water."?

Good point about the stairs, we never thought of that. As far as depth, we still haven't decided on anything yet.

Tress and bushes shed leaves/needles/bird leavings, etc. The spa being that close may collect a lot of it over time.

Oh and lets talk about the sun and shade on the pool. What part of the pool will be in the sun and how long each day?

You want your depth to be at least 3'5" to do a good crawl stroke. Any less and you could scrape your knuckles on the bottom. For the "deep end" what do you hope to do? Jump in? Dive in? Cannon Ball? Do you have kids?

So the pool has the deep end facing North and the shallow end facing South. We dont really have an option here as this is the only area we can put the pool. Our observation though, is that this area gets the most sun of our backyard.

Still haven't decided on depth yet and will probably be back at the forum to get ideas. However, for now we want to decide on the pool design so we can send it for permit approval.

So let me ask you another question, if we prefer the spa on the right side by the green giants, do you think if we shift everything over to the left to give us more space away from the green giants would that work? Besides the green giants issue, is there another advantage of having the spa at the deep end? something we did not consider? Thanks and sorry for all the questions.

The spa can go in either spot. You know how much stuff the green giants drop as you have maintained the yard. I will let you decide from your experience how much of a pain it will be to have it kind of close to them.

Spa-Some one can/will jump off the edge of it. (I am thinking of my husband and his brother LOL) It will be safer in the deep end.

You might also need to have a small bench at the deep end for people to use to get out of the pool on that end. You can put a small corner sitting bench that could also function as "step" to get out of the pool.

I vote for deep end.

1) the spa is the special guest at the dinner and deserves to sit at the head of the table

2) Besides the trees which will encroach the spa in no time, you will forever be on the wrong side of the spa if it's on the side of the pool. Your options will be to take the long way, or the wet way. 😁
