One of the pool guys came back yesterday and I told him about the problem. He hooked up the vacuum and ran it for a bit and said it looked fine. The problem was that the stuff on the bottom was caked on over the winter and won't come off easily.
He suggested that I take the pool brush and brush the walls and floor to stir up the dirt on the bottom. The stuff that settles will be easier to vacuum up and some of the other stuff will get sucked up the floor drain and caught in the filter.
