I just cleaned the grids and charged the filter, but there is a small leak around the belt. I need to lift the top to fix the O-ring. Question is, can I do this without losing the DE? Or do I need to backwash, service, and recharge?

You can shut off the pump and valves, open the air bleed on the filter and drain the filter through the plug without backwashing. You will lose some of the DE but not all of it. You can eyeball the amount of DE lost to see how much you need to add after refilling the filter.
so I opened the air bleed and let the water go below the return pipe. It took a while but I did not have to open the drain plug- did not lose any DE!
