Old Vinyl Liner and Staining

I guy in a pool store told me that the more a vinyl liner ages the worse it will stain and that when they are new they have some kind of coating that resists stains. Is that true or not?

Vinyl, like a lot of materials, will start out smooth but eventually develop porosity and gets rough. Have you ever seen a pool cleaner with rubber parts that have been submerged for a while? They degrade and get very rough.

That roughened surface texture is enough to pick up fine dirt and trap particulates. It's also a perfect place for metals to scale out of solution onto.

So yes, an old rough liner will definitely stain more easily than a new one.

Yes...my new lier doesn't show iron stains even if my stairs start staining. On my 15 y/o liner as of last year prior to change, you'd see it immediately if I let the sequestrant wear down.

Thanks, guess they were telling the truth. My liners only 7 years old though.
