no real test kit what can i do

Ok, you may have metals reacting with the chlorine causing the water to turn yellow, or you may have algae, or both. In general metals will result in clear tinted water, and algae in cloudy water. Also when you add chlorine in larger doses algae will tend to die and turn brown or gray and metals will get brighter quicker, but may also be a more intense brown color depending on the type of metal. This is where you really need a good test kit to know what you have going on.

Honestly, get a good test kit, any other advice would just be guessing and throwing money at the problem, and if the goal is to save money a good test kit is the way to do it. You can try randomly dosing with chlorine, it may clear up, or it may not, without the ability to do an overnight chlorine loss test (which you need the FAS-DPD chlorine test to accomplish) we don't enough know if your problem is organic or metals, or both. You could try to have your water tested for metals, at a pool store, and add sequesterant if the test is positive, but again, that may be only treating half of the problem if you also have organics (algae, etc.) in the water.
