The color of your plaster may make a difference too. If you have a lighter plaster you will get more light reflection (refraction?) and it will light up the pool more than the darker plasters. I have a darker plaster and feel the dark hole but I've seen larger pools look a lot brighter with the same number of lights and they all had a significantly lighter plaster than mine.
