I live just south of Birmingham AL. Is it best to close my pool or keep it open during the winter? Doesn't stay below freezing too long at a time here. Put a Solar Blanket on it for thee reasons: Keep water temp. higher, keep leaves out and to prevent water loss. What about chemical analysis level during winter, does it matter?

Welcome to TFP!

I would say that closing is not needed. Yes, pH needs to be maintained between 7.2 and 7.8 at all times. And FC needs to be kept above minimum for your CYA, [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA]. The good news is that the cover will help to stabilize your pH and also reduce FC usage. Also, cold water uses a lot less chlorine. Usually testing every week or two is sufficient.
