Did the pool company do that? As stated above, those boots are not intended to be used that way. It looks as though one is being used as a reducer.

Who can say. The previous owners were dumb. When they sold the house they removed the salt cell and sold it. They also took the shower doors out and sold them to the neighbor across the street.
I suspect that they did it that way to make it easy to change the filter sand, but who can say.
I know when I had to replace the filter 4 years ago, it made it a **** of a lot easier to deal with.
