Need to replace pump - recommendations welcome

It's common the have air bubbles collect in the strainer basket when running a variable speed pump on low. I'm not sure we've ever come up with a hard reason why, but we know that it happens.
+1 what bama posted.

I hope we can get an answer to that issue some day. It seems to not cause any major problems but it would be nice to understand what causes it and perhaps find a preventative measure.

I'll STAB a guess but it's purely a guess. Perhaps the very low vacuum at low speed doesn't provide a tight seal on the pump basket lid thus allowing air to enter at that point. When the VS is cranked up, the vacuum is increased in the pump basket and seals the lid tightly.

Got this from a Hayward tech support when I questioned the air space when I first go my VS in July.

Air space is acceptable as long as you are moving water and not
loosing prime. Make sure you maximum RPM is set by following these
instructions. Go into configuration on your controller by pushing the
menu button once. It will say configuration locked. Push the right
arrow and the left arrow in until it on locks. Enter in by hitting
the right arrow and continue to the Maximum RPM setting and by
pushing up or down button take it to 2850 RPMs for a pool with 2"
plumbing and 1750 RPMs for a pool with 1 1/2" plumbing, then continue
with the right arrow button until you get prime setting and in prime
setting change it from Auto Prime to three minute prime by hitting
the plus sign. Next hit the menu button once and it will ask you if
you want to save your setting push plus to save your setting and your
done.
