Doubler, I used the Lowes deck builder tool for my deck design. It worked pretty well. I didn't actually BUY the materials from Lowes, but the web tool gave me a good idea how I wanted to proceed.
Really? Did you choose the "Design from scratch - Custom Design" box? It makes you agree to terms of service, gives you 2 or 3 boxes with some basic instructions how to build and change views and then lets you resize the whole deck, add steps, add upper and lower levels, change decking materials, add hand rails, basic outdoor furniture, show the house walls, add cut-outs to the deck shape, etc. Pretty cool junk in there. At the end of your design session, you can even choose the upper right button for "Materials" to list materials and approx. cost.
I'm not a huge fan of Lowes store but I really like this online tool.
