I have the Zodiac Duoclear system with the salt cell and the N2 cartridge both in the same housing. Both sit in their own sections and have to be installed to seal the system (or water just sprays out). Having found brownish coloured stains (last year and again this year after cleaning the stains last year) on my returns and both the pump and skimmer basket (that easily removed with a vitamin C tablet), I decided to get rid of the N2 side of things.
I actually managed to open up the cartridge and remove a nylon mesh bag that contained a bunch of little balls (some silver coloured, some blue coloured). Then I put the cartridge back together and reinstalled it into the housing. So I am now running the system with an empty cartridge. I'll see if the brown stains return.
