It was out of laziness and impatience but I am glad I did not replace the whole wire harness first. I just repaired the gnawed wires and was able to prove that the other parts are OK (knock on wood). I will replace the wires at some point and definitely add the mesh you suggested.
By the way the mice were busy but they had probably been in there for about 4-5 months undisturbed. Plenty of time for a full wire feast!
What about the underside?
I don't know if the MasterTemp has (drainage/venting) holes on the bottom, but all my past heaters have. You might want to check with an inspection mirror (or maybe you can confirm looking from the inside).
