Well in mine, when in pool mode, it pulls water from the spa and the pool drains and returns it to the pool returns and the spa returns.

Essentially when I turn it into spa mode the pool is just cut out of the loop.

I suppose either way is ok. One way or another you need to circulate chlorinated water to the spa.
