Does it hurt your system to do this? If I leave it open after cleaning, my pump runs dry temporarily while pulling in water, even if I fill the pump reservoir. If I leave it closed for about 10 seconds then open, then I get a large bubble out of the return then all is fine. This is the first time I did this, as I just installed a new VS pump and dont want it running dry. Will this hurt my plumbing lines?

You will not hurt anything. I typically fire up the pump and then go over and open up the air release valve. Then when water comes spraying out and close the valve.

As long as the pump primes within a minute or so there's nothing to worry about.
