TexasGolfer, this is from your post 51.

The FC typically registers between 5 and 8 12 hours after my previous chlorine addition.
By definition you are letting it get below the stated SLAM level.

+1 to what HouTex said. Below is an excerpt from the Chlorine/CYA Chart (http://www.troublefreepool.com/content/128-chlorine-cya-chart-slam-shock). The 12 ppm (parts-per-million) shown in the SHOCK FC column is the target FC for a CYA of 30. It is a target, not an absolute minimum. However, if the FC is dropping to 5-8 ppm, that's letting it go well off target.

Given the fact that you are away from home 12 or so hours per day, here's some suggestions that will help work around this. I will warn you that some of these are not necessarily convenient but they will definitely help...
  1. Burn a vacation day or two.
  2. Assuming you work M-F and choose not to use a vacation day or two, wait until Friday evening to begin the SLAM process and devote the entire weekend to this. You may not get through the SLAM by the end of the weekend, but you will kill off enough algae to reduce the chlorine demand at the start of the next week.
  3. Get up an hour earlier each day to test the water and add FC to bring it up to SLAM level. Then repeat this process right before you go to work. On this second dosing, you can add FC to go above the target level by a few ppm to compensate for the FC loss during the day. This will at least keep you closer to target by the time you get home.
  4. Test and dose immediately once you get home and at least 1-2 X before you go to bed.
  5. Hire a trusted kid/friend/neighbor to test and add chlorine once during the day
  6. Partially cover the pool during the day to keep the sunlight from consuming FC (don't cover the pool completely, though)
  7. Ask if you can work from home for a couple of days, if that's an option.
  8. If you live close enough to the office, come home for lunch and test/dose.

You have been given helpful and accurate advice by several of our finest members. While this process can be frustrating for you, please do not vent your frustration on those who are trying to help. Please extend them some courtesy. And...oh yeah...this might help:
