Hello I am a new pool owner with a salt water system

You need to tell us more about your pool..

How big is it.
What equipment do you have
Is it an old pool, but new to you, or is it a new pool.
Does it have water in it now?
Is it an above ground pool or an in ground pool?

Thank you so much. I understand that I need to add the stabilizer first. Can I use shock for the chlorine or must I buy liquid chlorine on top of adding the salt?
It said to add the salt and let it dissolve for 24 hrs prior to running the salt system.

Okay, sorry I have been told to shock it. So no shock. Buy liquid chlorine.

yes. Chlorine is king. Add 3 ppm FC worth of liquid chlorine now and each day until you get your SWCG operating.

Consider getting a proper test kit as discussed in the article linked above. Those test strips are lovingly called guess strips. Your guess will be as accurate as they are.

Liquid Chlorine is often sold by pool stores as "Liquid Shock" usually 12.5%..

As long as it is Liquid and not dry, then you can use Liquid Chlorine and Liquid Shock interchangeably

Granular. Typically available at Walmart, Home Depot, Amazon, etc.

I find that ladies knee-high stockings work the best for me.. You just hang them in front of a running pool return.
