These older units can take it where as the new units can not. However, I still contend that the main reason for the newer units leaking is do to the extrusion process of the heat exchanger.
I don't know about the extrusion process. However, I think that they changed from a four tube two pass design to a two tube four pass design. This greatly increases the velocity of the water and the erosion of the copper.
The damage seems to be near a sharp edge that would induce turbulent flow.
Wow, I spent a ton of time trying to figure out why heater was shutting down when it was actually because the water flow was too strong. So opened diversion valve (to heater) half way to slow the water flow and bingo, it worked.
