Pool is currently balanced to TFP standards regarding all readings...no more dead algae piles on the floor, CC is 0, and passed another OCLT last night, water is crystal clear...so my algae bloom nightmare is behind me.
However, going on vacation soon for 3 days and I have nobody to watch the pool...we live out in the country. I've read many "vacation" blog entries on here and a lot of people seem to add chlorine pucks to chlorinators to keep FC balanced while away from home. However, pucks mean increased CYA into the pool. I do NOT want to go that route! The month-long algae bloom nightmare behind me was mainly caused by me using pucks for years instead of liquid chlorine. My CYA was 180. 8500 gallons from the water truck last week have my CYA down to a healthy 50. So, I don't ever intend to add pucks to my pool again.
So based on the FC/CYA Chart I've been keeping my daily FC level at 7-8 (CYA 50). I've noticed that I tend to lose 2ppm of FC per day if it's sunny all day long. So if the weather is sunny the whole time I'm gone, my FC could be down to 2ppm when I get home...low enough for me to have the repeat mess from last month (algae!) Based on a CYA 50 could I just up my FC to the SLAM amount of 20ppm right before I leave? Then my FC should still be at 14ppm when I get home and I should still have clear water?
Or since I lose 2ppm of FC daily (Michigan) should I just up my FC to 14ppm right before I leave in anticipation of it dropping back down to 8ppm while I'm gone?
Thanks,
Todd
