Eyeball returns

Good afternoon all,
When I first moved in this pool had push in eyeballs on the two returns. I tried replacing with new screw in’s since the pipe seems to be threaded but they did not fit.
Pool store said they didn’t know why if they were standard and didn’t have anything smaller. This is an older Anthony Sylvan pool built in the 70s. Anyone know what they used back then?

What size is the opening ?
I did run across these two while doing a search:

What size is the opening ?

So here is a photo of the new one I bought that doesn’t fit. Measure 1” 3/4?
The push in I have measure 1” 1/2 and the opening looks like 1” 1/2
