I had a heater on my CA pool, but only used it for the spa and early in the season to bump up from 76-80. Just seems in AZ my main concern will be keeping the water cool. I am not doing a spa this time rarely used the one in CA.

Depends! If you wish to swim in April and early May, yes. Days will be in the 80's and 90's, but nightime temperatures cool the pool off.

My perfect pool here is a rectangle, with benches around it you sit on with water up to your shoulders, an autocover, a chiller, and softened water for fill water. A heater will be nice, but with the cover, you have a chance of getting the water warm by early May and keeping it into late September.

Sadly, I found this out AFTER we had our pool built!
