My pool does not have a built in autofill. Normally it is not a problem to just fill with a garden hose. I have been guilty of forgetting to turn it off....or worry if a neighbor helping while I'm away and forgetting as well. I have seen a lot of projects involving a float valve such as used in a toilet tank but then I found a product used a lot for livestock tanks, ponds and fountains called a Hudson valve. It does not take up as much room as a float valve (can be lowered into a skimmer) and is a very simple design. It gives me piece of mind while away and is convenient when I'm home as it shuts off when the level is achieved. You need to start out with something flat to fit over the skimmer cover and then drill a hole for a bulkhead pass through (Like what is used to attach a spigot to a barrel). Once you figure out the proper depth to fill the skimmer, attach the valve and plumb to a garden hose fitting or permanent plumbing. I opted to attach to a garden hose as I only intend to use it as needed.
