Disposal of Testing Chemicals that are old/expired

Could someone tell me the best way to dispose of old/expired testing chemicals? In reading some old posts, it says to pour them down the drain or in dirt.

We have a septic system, so not sure if these would be safe to pour down the drain or not.

Keep them in the containers and throw them in the garbage.
