Chlorine test starts clear, then turns bright yellow

Well, get a CYA reading, adjust your target FC to that, then add the right amount of bleach!

You'll be needing bleach pretty much daily.
just added 1 lb of CYA powder to my skimmer 2 days ago, so I need to wait 5 more days, right?
Do you remember what the target was for your CYA? Use that number. It's probably working, it just doesn't show up well on tests for several days.

I would shoot for 20-30 with your cover. That said, it seems like you are adding CYA willy nilly.
lol, "adding CYA willy nilly" - you guys have scared me plenty regarding too high CYA levels :)

PoolCalculator says that the 7 lbs of trichlor I added for the first 6 weeks of the pool life should have resulted in a CYA level of 13. However, the black dot at the bottom of the tube was totally clear, which indicates CYA of 0, right? So, back to PoolCalculator: For 36k water, to go from 0 to 20 CYA, it recommends 96 oz of CYA. (Interestingly, both pool stores that sampled my water suggested 4 lbs of CYA.) Therefore, I've added about 32 oz so far, and will re-test a week after adding, and continue to creep up to 20.

FWIW, here's my pool log (I'm skipping the early entries, before the TF100 arrived):
Date Method FreeChlorine CombinedChl Alkalinity pH CyA Notes
6/13/2013 19:30:00 TF100 kit! 0 7.5
6/13/2013 19:30:00 add Added about 100 oz of 10% bleach
6/14/2013 10:00:00 add Added ~300oz of 6%
6/14/2013 10:00:00 kit 0.5
6/14/2013 21:00:00 add Added 128 oz of 8.25% bleach
6/15/2013 1:00:00 add Added 32 oz of CYA
6/15/2013 10:00:00 add Added 256 oz of 10% bleach (HomeDepot, made June 11th!)
6/15/2013 17:00:00 kit 4 0.5
6/16/2013 11:00:00 kit 2 0
6/17/2013 9:30:00 kit 0.5 0
6/17/2013 9:30:00 add Added 60 oz of 10% bleach

And, for completeness, here's where I believe I am currently (before this morning's bleach-add):
FC 0.5
CC 0
pH 7.5
TA 200
CH 160
CYA ?

Thanks again for all the help - I'm open to any recommendations :)

Looks like you let the FC level get too low for me before you add chlorine.

6/14/2013 10:00:00 kit 0.5
6/14/2013 21:00:00 add Added 128 oz of 8.25% bleach

0.5 is too low, you didn't add the bleach until 11 hours later

6/16/2013 11:00:00 kit 2 0
6/17/2013 9:30:00 kit 0.5 0
6/17/2013 9:30:00 add Added 60 oz of 10% bleach

Again back to 0.5, but you added it right away.

You're now getting a feel for how often you need to add bleach (depending on weather conditions of course)

You added some CYA - I think the level you should be at is 10 if you were really at 0. So I would go by the chlorine/CYA chart for 20 and keep chlorine level at 2 for a minimum.

Others, feel free to chime in, started BBB last year and I'm not an expert.

You're totally right, I didn't have any on hand. I've now stocked up a bit, although I think I'm going to torch through my 6 gal of 10%, while I continue to raise my CYA. Still looking for a better deal than $6.86 for 2 gal of 10% ($.27/oz) at Home Depot here in San Jose CA. At least that's better than the .60/oz I paid at CVS in a pinch! :)
