Check Valve?, Leak?, or Both?

I was having a wood gate replaced in my backyard and the fence guy could not set the support post because there was too much water underground. In order to see if the pool might be the cause, I turned off the pump and overnight lost a considerable amount of water in my spa that sits above my pool. With that said, I have been adding water to the pool every two days or so for the past month or so which is considerably more than usual. I have had the check valve replaced within the past year....could it already be bad again?. If the check valve is bad and the spa loses water as a result when the pool pump is off is it possible the water could drain underground and not into just move from the spa into the pool?
