That I can see, I was just trying to figure out how the op was figuring that the 3" pipe was there to help "lower the gpm's being pushed through the filter and heater."
It's not the 3" that lowers it. It would actually push too much through. That is why there is a bypass before the filter and heater to split the gpm's there where a portion goes around the two thus lowering what does go through.
