Auto cover used for winterizing pool

We just had an unground pool out in with an auto cover to be used in lieu of a fence. We live in CT and have relatively harsh winters. Our pool builder told us that we should not use the auto cover to winterize the pool. Has anyone else run into this? It’s a little discouraging due to how much it cost. Also it would be nice to have the level of comfort of a durable cover for the winter time

The auto-cover needs to rest on water. If winterizing involves lowering the water level, the auto-cover will sag and stretch, damaging it. If you leave the water at normal level, and it freezes over, the cover may adhere and you will have to be careful not to open the cover until it thaws.

I live in a warm climate so don't need to worry about this, but I have seen people on this forum say they leave the auto-cover open so they can lower the water level, and they use a separate cover all winter.
