With a CYA of 40 ppm, I would bring chlorine level up to around 8-10 ppm and HOLD IT THERE. Over the next 24-48 hours you will hopefully see that your pool is crystal clear and you are losing FC of about 4-5 ppm daily.

If you continue to lose more FC than that, then you probably need to SLAM again.

Are you covering the pool?

It has a cheap intex blue bubble cover but it is about 4 feet too small for the pool. It was the only thing that was easily attainable locally. In the future I'd like to find a nicer cover but my mother needs to be able to pull it off by herself and this is about as big as she can handle. I salt water system is also in the plans as I am not always available to add chlorine. Thanks for the tip.

Well kept fc over 10 for a couple days and its not any better. Added a gallon last night and it was at 0 when I checked it at 10am, added another gallon and its only at .2ppm now at 2:30.
