Can anyone help me identify what type of algea this is? We just opened the salt water pool and this algea is everywhere. The water is clear by now but these stains will not scrub off the walls. The pool is older and has a slightly rough Gunite finish. We have balance and shocked and added algea buster. The stains look very reddish brown in person but don’t really come through in the photos. The stains also look like they are in patches of little circles. Any suggestions will be appreciated!!!

I don’t know what algea buster is but here’s how to identify & deal with black algae

This is much like my problem. I have a large percent of my pool that is covered at this point. I swam down and scrubbed and it comes off but it is a lot of scrubbing. I don't even think I can scrub that hard from the outside of the pool with a pole. Honestly wondering if I need to drain, acid wash, and get a floor buffer. o_O Been SLAMming and scrubbing for a week now with basically no result. And sure,. I can do the puck thing but that is a ridiculous amount of work at this point.

So this is generally not recommended, but if it is black algae and if you do have that much of it you might want to try this.

Get a weak pressure washer and get into the pool and start pressure washing it. The algae should pop off. Be VERY careful not to damage your plaster (hence the weak pressure washer).

Then get a 1 gallon pump spray. Fill it with the strongest LC you can find. Get in the pool and spray those sections.

Keep your FC at 20% of your CYA for weeks.

Yes you can do this while the pool is full. Dont drain. The water will provide a buffer for the pressure washer.

It is easier than scrubbing with a SS brush, and will probably do less damage than a drain and acid wash.

The poster with the older plaster needs to be more careful. The poster with the pebbletec should handle it better.
