Adding DE to a DE Filter

I have been adding a scoops of DE directly into the skimmer basket nearest the filter. Is this an OK method or should it be mixed in a bucket and added diluted onto the skimmer?

I'm curious about the kind of DE. I have food grade, its very fine and dusty. Is that okay or is there a different product that should be added? I have a sand filter and I'm finishing a SLAM.
