Would having air in my lines cause the sand from my filter to blow out the jet?

Welcome to TFP!!!

Nope. Sounds like 2 different problems.
1. You should not have air in your lines ... points to a suction side leak
2. Sand should not enter the pool ... points to a problem in the filter or backwash valve.

While looking into the filter for the problem, I found only 3 of the 8 laterals were attached to the hub. Also less than half a bag of sand left in the filter. Thank you for the guidance on my first problem. Now on to the new Since taking the plumbing off the filter, I now have to replumb. Are there any special pipes, glue, silicone that I will need?

If PVC piping, just a kit of primer and glue that comes together in a pack.
