chlorine acid vanish, CYA vanished, bad pH reagent and non-ergonomic spoon

little threads in the big thread
1) pool is a bleach / acid black hole
2) where did the CYA go
3) how to get the CYA back
4) why is the pH color so intense
5) non-ergonomic spoon

1) on no bleach and Rainbow setting 3 tabs 5
FC 4.4 yesterday and 5.5 today
pH 7.4 yesterday and today
so no FC and acid black hole with no bleach and acidic tabs running
no empty bleach bottles
tabs are surely convenient

2) still not clear

3) reads 20-30 CYA this AM with the TF100 so CYA budged a bit with 30oz and the tabs even with heater on
will see what tomorrow brings

4) over done, if result funky toss the bottle

5) friend laughed at my scorched spoon, said I should have used boiling water or hair dryer; no answer from Taylor

Tabs are convenient, until your cya gets so high you have to drain and refill to get it lowered. It's surprising how little time that can take. That'll be when you decide to install a swcg.

thank you

SWG? true, several have suggested that; that may in fact be the long term plan
but...
also solar to reduce heating oil bill
also new plaster as current is 20 years old and rough and stained
also re-attach the loose deck slates
so am looking at some $$ to be parsed

have to drain...to get it lowered? would be painful especially since
1) we have no city storm sewer to drain into
2) draining into Puget Sound neutralized or not seems narrow minded
3) taking 30k from the well to refill seems kinda arrogant

but at this moment with CYA coming up from not measurable tabs are convenient
5 tabs q week I guess is 5ppm CYA per q week so I have a little time

current plan is to get CYA to ?40, then use 12.5% bleach (to minimize empty bottles) and run the Rainbow at some low level when away (to avoid FC=0)

but all is fun
and grand baby giggles are immeasurable
and you guys are helpful

thermometer says 99degrees today on the pool deck, gotta be in the top 1% for out here

good morning

little threads in the big thread (4 is done)
1) pool is a bleach / acid black hole
2) where did the CYA go
3) how to get the CYA back
5) non-ergonomic spoon

pool is clear, pump heater time is 6-11am 1-5 8-9 12-1 4-5

1) certainly is not a bleach / acid black hole on this Rainbow tabs5 setting3 routine; has been stable at FC ~5 and pH 7.4 for ~48 hours
3) CYA read 20-30 yesterday 24 hrs after 2 lb CYA; today reads no greater and maybe even less, maybe 20; so put in another 2 lbs
5) Taylor answered and said

"Thank you for your messages through our website. They were forwarded to my attention for reply. I spoke with our Engineering Department and learned the design of the product had a foundation in how it would be manufactured in our in-house plastics department. I am formally documenting your feedback in our Quality Management system. We are continually looking for ways to improve our product and messages like yours certainly help us."

#5 is done as is now in the Taylor black hole. Will just bend 'em with boiling water. They sell 'em in packs of 12 for $1.80 so is nothing compared to other pool expenses.

am back from Seattle

remaining little threads in the big thread (4 & 5 done)
1) pool is a bleach / acid black hole
2) where did the CYA go
3) how to get the CYA back

as for 3
added 2lb CYA twice with the sock / squeeze method
data are
7/15 CYA <20 add 2lb
7/16 20-30
7/17 20-30 add 2lb
7/18 30-40
7/19 30-40
7/22 30-40

would appear mini-thread3 is gone
leaves 1 and 2

I guess now turn off the Rainbow

would seem we can close this thread
remaining little threads in the big thread
1) pool is a bleach / acid black hole
2) where did the CYA go

2) where did it go
There was discussion of would the heater consume CYA and several of you doubted. Have now followed for about two weeks after CYA restored and there has been little if any decline. Conclude therefore you were correct. Heater does little if anything to CYA.
So where then did it go? Several of you suggested it dwindles away a few ppm per month and since I was not testing regularly, I missed it. Conclude therefore you were correct.
I will now test monthly.

1) pool was bleach/acid black hole
from the diary seems that CYA bottomed out at the same time the sun maxed out, would then explain the bleach black hole
and the acid black hole? 2 or 3 gallons of 5.25% bleach / day would explain the acid requirement
I now have 12.5% chlorine and the number of empty bleach and acid bottles is considerably reduced

thank you for your assistance in my understanding of these processes
done

PS
chems today
FC5 pH7.8 TA 70 CYA about 40 water clear sunny day
