I have a above ground pool. Started looking greenish, although it has always been chlorinated. I shocked it and it's still merky and not blue. What do I do?
Very likely, your "shock" is dichlor or trichlor. Dichlor/trichlor contain CYA (stabiliser) and chlorine. The chlorine is used up, but the CYA keeps increasing as you add "shock". The main issue with this is that as CYA increases, you need to increase your chlorine levels to keep algae at bay. See the chlorine/CYA chart.
Thus, even though your pool has always been chlorinated, the chlorine levels may not be appropriate for your CYA levels.
With an AG pool, what you should do next really depends on the size of your pool.
If your pool is small enough (<3000 gal), it would be advisable drain completely and re-start with a clean slate following the guide for seasonal/temporary pools
However, if your pool is much larger, it would be advisable to 1) switch to bleach/liquid chlorine 2) get one of the recommended test kits 3) SLAM your pool.
