Yup. This is why we always try to recommend true pool valves (like the Neverlube). The PVC ball valves get stiff and then they break resulting in a re-plumb.

Another good thing about the pool valves are that they can be rebuilt without removing them from the plumbing.

If you need to turn them until you replace....try a strap wrench.

Don't always have to replace ball valves if the handles break. Jandy ball valves pop off and can be replaced as long as the valves still function.

This sucks! I have 6 of these valves, and don't have $300 for jandy valves. So it looks like I'm replumbing these. I heard about UV rays giving you cancer, but nothing about headaches!

A big pair of channel lock pliers works well too.

Re: PVC Ball valve wing handles breaking

Good News! "Once in while the blind squirrel finds that nut." I contacted the manufacturer and the handle is replaceable. Just use a screwdriver to break off the glued on cap then remove the phillips head screw and the handle will pull straight off. I tested it and it is true. My valves were manufactured by Grandy Company. The part number for the handle is HMIP200. I bought 8 handles for $38 including shipping. No plumbing for me!

I was wondering about these same valves in my pool. I painted mine to try to slow down the effects of the sun but I'm glad to see I wont need to replumb whenever those those handles finally break off. Thanks a bunch for the post and video.

Awesome post, thanks for making the video. I never would have thought you could replace just the handle.

I looked at Lowe's site and you can only buy the valves. The valves are $14.85 each I need 6 of them. I could not find the replacement handles and I'm not sure if these are Granby valves. I http://www.lowes.com/pd_21489-34146-P20 ... fo=ordered 8 handles just to be safe.

Re: PVC Ball valve wing handles breaking

Those Lowes and HD valves are VERY hard to turn. Net impossible for larger valves. Are the Andy ball valves any easier to turn or do you have to go to never lubes to be easy to turn? I need two for slide water throttling. I like the basic handy ball valve with built in union, but it will be located under slide entry where I can't get a wrench, only my hand.

Go with the never lube valves. Those ball valve handles will break eventually and then you have to replace them again. Do it right and go never lube.

Check the pentair and hayward versions of those never lube valves too...they're just as good, and may be cheaper depending on where you get them.

I was looking at pentair valves since I have seen them quite a bit cheaper, but they look a little different in construction, see the pvc version here: http://pentairpool.com/pool-owner/pr...d-3-way-39.htm also here: http://www.poolsupplyworld.com/Penta...ipe/263037.htm

Are valves like these any good? Only $20 bucks for 1.5" 2-way or $24 for 3-way...what am I missing?
