I have a Hayward S200 Sand filter and recently replaced the sand. Took old sand out, added water then the new sand (200# as the specs indicated). It's been a few weeks and everything seems ok unless we backwash or have the filter turned off for a time. As soon as we turn back on to filter, we can clearly see sand shooting into the pool for a minute or so. It stops after that and everything is fine, but makes the water all cloudy and have to vacuum up the sand once it settles. When we don't backwash the filter seems fine and pool is crystal clear-no sand deposits. Could we have too much sand it the filter? Broken lateral? Something else?

After backwashing, are you rinsing the filter for the recommended 3 minutes or until the sight glass is clear?
Yes, there is sand in the glass for a minute or so too-then pretty much clears (a bit of sand seems to stay in the bottom of glass, but water is clear). What would cause the sand only when starting up on filter?
Since you just replaced the sand I'd suspect something internal. Maybe the center pipe or the lateral assembly. There was plenty of freeboard left in the filter after adding the sand wasn't there?
