Hayward Max Flo XL Pump Won’t Start

I actually just did that and that’s how I realized the impeller will not move. Trying to wedge a screwdriver into the impeller opening to free it up felt like I was going to snap the plastic impeller so I didn’t press it too hard. Looking at a couple other videos on YouTube showed people freeing...

Hayward Max Flo XL Pump Won’t Start

So, the starting capacitor wasn’t the issue. I stand corrected from earlier… the shaft is not rotating. How do I access the shaft to try and free it up? Am I correct in thinking I have to disconnect the green wire shown as “1” from the capacitor, then unscrew the screw shown in “2”… is there...

Hayward Max Flo XL Pump Won’t Start

Late last season, cycling the switch on and off several times, the motor would hum but then eventually start (as long as I didn’t let it hum too long before tripping the breaker). Today, it just hummed but never actually turned on. Turning it on and off several times didn’t help, and it...

Hayward Max Flo XL Pump Won’t Start

Thank you for the response. I will try to replace the starting capacitor. Would you happen to have a link to a website to buy the correct starting capacitor for this pump?

Hayward Max Flo XL Pump Won’t Start

I have a Hayward Max Flo XP 1.0 HP pump… image of nameplate attached. Went to start it up this season and it just makes a whirring sound for about 10 seconds then trips the breaker. The pump is only about 6-7 years old. I’ve tried cycling the breaker several times, but that hasn’t worked. I...

    Recirculate with Triton Filter

Helping a friend close a pool… not familiar with this style setup. Is there a way to put this filter on recirculate? And how would I manipulate the valve to do so? Thanks for your help.

    Best Leak Detection Product/Method

Gotta liner leak somewhere. Liner is 13 years old and will be replaced at end of season, so just trying to get thru this summer. Currently losing 1/4-1/2” per day. Checked the usual culprits, near the main drain, ladder, skimmer, steps. Nothing obvious. Can anyone recommend a tracer dye and...

    “Other Ingredients” in Regular Bleach

I realize laundry aisle bleach has a lower concentration of sodium hypochlorite, but it also says 92.5% “other ingredients”, as compared to pool store chlorine which says “inert ingredients”. Should I be worried about any of the “other” ingredients if I use grocery store disinfecting bleach?

    Weird Looking Backwash Valve

Was helping a friend open their pool. The filter system is pretty old, and it has a backwash valve that I've never seen before. It wasn't budging when I tried to move it, so rather than break it, I figured I'd ask around to see if anyone is familiar with this black valve style and the proper...

    Wrinkles in Shallow End Liner

I drained my pool a bit lower than usual closing it last year. Down to the return jets just to be safe. It was my first time closing it on my own and I was paranoid of water in the lines. Probably wasn’t necessary to lower it that much. Fast forward to me opening this year, the shallow end of...

Closing Inground Pool for First Time

I bought a Porter Cable 6 gallon 150 psi compressor and am attempting to close my inground pool for the first time. I have watched various videos and am feeling pretty prepared, but I have a couple questions. On nearly all the videos I've seen, the person closing the pool has ample time to...

Feel Guilty Using Pool First Aid

The same thing happens to me every year...I open up my inground pool each year and it's a little swampy. I shock it with liquid chlorine, and it all dies within 6 hours. The next 5 days it clears up considerably, but then it reaches a plateau where it's almost completely clear, but not QUITE...

    OCLT Test Passed...Suggested Clarifier?

I guess I was thinking that if the water was 'almost clear' and I passed the OCLT...this meant that all the algae was dead, and the only thing preventing a perfectly clear pool was the inability of the sand filter to clear it. But what you guys are saying that an 'almost clear' pool could also...

    OCLT Test Passed...Suggested Clarifier?

Thank you for the reponses. I have increased back to SLAM level, and will hold until clear. I tried a shortcut, and looks like I shouldn't have. I understand that meeting all 3 criteria is a fool-proof way of getting your pool clear, but from a Chemistry standpoint, what is the logic to...

    OCLT Test Passed...Suggested Clarifier?

I only have a mesh safety cover for the Winter, so every Spring my pool is a green swamp. I SLAM the heck out of it, and the algae turns blue within 4 hours. The next week or so is full of maintaining shock level and backwashing when the filter clogs. Every year, I reach the point I'm at now...

Calcium Plus...To Add or Not to Add?

I was a little frustrated at how slow the pool was clearing up after being a swamp all winter. Going on almost two weeks, maintaining the correct SLAM level, and seeing a real slow improvement every day, I decided to add some Pool First Aid that was left over from a previous owner. 16 hours...

How Precisely Do You Measure CYA?

I understand that the CYA test is the most 'subjective' of all the tests, but how specifically do you guys measure it? There is a decent range from JUST when you begin to see the black dot disappear, to when the black dot is completely invisible. What is the standard way of measuring? Thanks!

Calcium Plus...To Add or Not to Add?

I'm an idiot and realize the laminated sheet said that TOO HIGH of CH can cause cloudiness, not too low. Oh well, I'll consider it a waste of $17 for a bucket of CH and a lesson learned. I think this is just a case of me being impatient. I'm having to backwash every two days, indicating the...

Calcium Plus...To Add or Not to Add?

I opened my pool last week. It is an inground, vinyl, 20,000 pool. It was previously a green swamp, but has improved substantially since. I noticed the last two days though, the rate at which it is clearing up has slowed significantly. I am maintaining the recommended chlorine level for a...

1-4 ppm FAC before adding CYA?

It's a PoolLife product. Didn't make much sense to me, but still wanted to check. Must just be a general guideline for what they suggest FAC to be. Thanks for the quick replies!

1-4 ppm FAC before adding CYA?

I opened my pool a few days ago, and immediately dumped in four gallons of liquid chlorine to initiate the kill of the swamp-like appearance. As I took more tests today, I noticed my CYA is very low (below 20), and went to go buy some. I noticed that the bottle says to get the FAC level...
